THE COMPLETE “SPLITS IN FOUR WEEKS“ PROGRAM
“Okay,“ said Hori. “Let’s start with an overview of the Splits in Four Weeks program that I learned from Eiko.“ He erased the white board and began to write down a description of the program.
The Splits in Four Weeks Program
•Basic Stretch 1: Towel Stretch
•Basic Stretch 2: Sumo Stretch
•Weekly Stretch x 4 Types
Week 1: Inner Thigh Stretch
Week 2: Wall Stretch
Week 3: Chair Stretch
Week 4: Door Stretch
•Achieve the Splits!
“First,“ said Hori, “being able to do the splits—that is, being able to spread your legs fully and place both elbows on the floor—boils down to loosening up the backs of your legs, your ankles, and your knees.“
“You know, when we did that stretch a minute ago,“ said Oba, “I could really feel it working on the backs of my legs.“
“Of course you could,“ said Hori. “Like I said, it all boils down to stretching out the backs of your legs. I’m going to explain the four-week program now, and I know you’ll be able to see how logical and time-efficient the steps are. It’s always better to see results sooner than later, right?“
Displaying her usual studious approach, Umemoto quickly took out a memo pad and began taking notes. “In other words,“ she said, “the program is made up of four week-long stages. Basic stretches one and two are common to each stage, supplemented by a different weekly stretch each time, right?“
“Exactly,“ said Hori. “You do three types of daily stretches each week. I’ll go through all the details. We’ll start with the two basic stretches, okay? Ai, do you want to try, too, this time?“
“Sure,“ Umemoto said. “Let me have a go.“
“Okay! Makoto take this towel. We’re going to start with the towel stretch, and afterward, I’ll show you the sumo stretch.”
“You’ll repeat these two basic stretches every day until you’re able to do the splits,“ Hori explained. “They act as benchmarks, too. As you get nearer to being able to do the splits, you’ll see how you’re able to draw your leg closer to your head during the towel stretch and lower your backside farther during the sumo stretch.“
Oba was already breathing a little hard, but Umemoto seemed to be enjoying herself. “I see,“ she said. “Next we add the weekly stretches, right?“
“That’s right. Here’s the one for the first week.“
